High School Soundtrack: Disney Edition

Alexa Baer and Gissel Campos

Admit it: whenever you hear a Disney song you can’t help but sing along. After all, Disney movies were the soundtrack of your childhood, and it’s probably hard to resist the urge to belt out a Disney song every once in a while. You may think it’s childish, but we bet you never realized just how much Disney movies apply to high school. We have compiled a list (in no particular order) of the 15 most relatable Disney songs for a high school student.

1) A Whole New World (Aladdin) – Like Jasmine, stepping into high school for the first time can feel like stepping onto a magic flying carpet – you’re not sure what to expect, but you know it’ll be a fun adventure.

2) Friend Like Me (Aladdin) – High school is the best place to find a best friend. Even though you probably won’t find a lamp with a wish-granting Genie in it, you can definitely find lots of fun, interesting, and unique potential BBFs. In high school you’re bound to find that one person who gets you, will have your back, and be that one-of-a-kind bestie like you’ve never had before.

3) I’ll Make a Man Out of You (Mulan) –High school is like a boot camp for the real world. It’s where you transition from a little kid into a young adult, which can feel like going into battle. In a way, your teachers are like Shang, trying to make you into respectable students. However, unlike in Shang’s army, not all of the soldiers do well enough in training camp to get sent off to war, so make sure you pay attention and take note; you don’t want to be left behind or end up like Lin, regretting the fact that he cut gym class. High school is for having fun, but also for doing your work – get down to business, find your center, and you’ll be sure to win. One way or another, your teachers will make a man (or woman) out of you.

4) Reflection (Mulan) – Like Mulan, we all wonder who we really are, what we want to do, and who we want to be. So if you’re looking in a pond at your reflection and you don’t recognize yourself, you’re not alone. Most of us won’t complete the entire process of figuring ourselves out until after college, but high school is where we first start exploring. Joining a club is a great way to start finding out what you like to do. In high school there is a club for everything: sailing, acting, recycling, etc. Though clubs are a good place to start, you won’t find yourself overnight. So if you don’t know who you are yet, don’t panic!

5) Go the Distance (Hercules) – Even though high school isn’t quite the same as slaying monsters and trying to prove yourself a true hero worthy of immortality, it can sometimes feel that hard, and can definitely get that exhausting. As hard as it may seem, though, remember that you can go the distance. You will find your way, and somehow, you’ll be strong. Someday you’ll look back and see that every mile was worth your while. Take it from Hercules, who lost everything he had, but found the internal strength and courage to go from zero to hero in no time flat.

6) Mother Knows Best (Tangled) -Though it’s often hard to see eye-to-eye with Mom (or Dad, or pretty much any other authority figure that’s responsible for making sure you become a productive member of society), always remember that they are just trying to help. It’s worth your time to listen to your parents, take some advice, and learn a thing or two from them. Unlike Rapunzel’s mom, who keeps her daughter locked up for her own personal benefit, your mom and dad really do just want what’s best, and sometimes they know what’s best as well.

7) I’ve Got a Dream (Tangled) – Everyone’s got a dream. Even Rapunzel’s thug friends Bruiser and Killer have dreams. No matter how way down deep inside it is, we all have a dream, and high school is a great place to find it and start working toward it. Teachers, counselors, and your fellow dreamers are here to help you make your dream come true. And keep in mind that no dream is too big or too small, too ridiculous or too impossible – if bad guys can dream about being florists and cupcake bakers…well, let’s just say you won’t be judged.

8) When Will My Life Begin? (Tangled) – You may ask yourself this question a lot – especially when you wake up at 5:30 on Monday morning and realize you’ve spent your whole weekend writing papers and studying for tests – but as endless as the homework and sleep deprivation may seem, they won’t last forever. Even if you feel like you’re trapped in a tower, just you and your books, don’t forget to look out the window and take a breath. Just keep pushing on, stay positive, and be patient – pretty soon you’ll be free. Or, you know, your hair will finally be long enough to throw out the window and climb down. Whatever comes first.

9) Almost There (The Princess and The Frog) – We all face trials and tribulations during high school, but it’s those struggles that make finally graduating worth it. Obstacles will keep popping up, but don’t let them stop you from achieving your goals, whether that’s opening a restaurant like Tiana wants to do, or becoming a famous trumpet player like Louis. If Louis won’t let being an alligator stop him, then don’t let anything stop you. Carry on and work hard, because working hard always pays off. Just remember to reward yourself every now and then for all you’ve accomplished so far: take a few breaks and make time to do something you love.

10) Someday My Prince Will Come (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) – Prom is inevitable. So is finding a prince. Stressing about finding a date isn’t going to help, so maybe we should all just take a more laid back approach, like Snow White. She never worried about it, and in the end she got her prince (even if she did get poisoned first).

11) I Just Can’t Wait to Be King (Lion King) – Hallelujah! It’s almost senior year, and just like Simba and Nala, we just can’t wait to be king (or queen).  Finally we’ll be able to rule the jungle (or school), and I just can’t wait to… plan our senior prank.

12) Hakuna Matata (Lion King) – Ah, what a wonderful phrase. It’s a problem-free philosophy that means “no worries for the rest of your days” in Swahili. Well, actually, the rough translation is “there isn’t a problem/trouble,” but you get the idea. This never-passing craze is a great saying to keep in mind. It’ll never get old, never stop being relevant, and will help you keep pushing forward.

13) Be Prepared (Lion King) – So honestly, how many of your teachers have said they are trying to “prepare” you for next year? Like, all of them, right? High school is all about being prepared – prepared for your classes, college, and life. We might not always be prepared for everything, but high school teachers try to get us ready, much like Scar preps the hyenas for the death of the king. Sometimes as students we see teachers as Scar, determined to kill our GPAs or muttering Scar’s best quote ever, “I am surrounded by idiots” under their breaths. But in reality, our teachers are just looking out for us. They aren’t as villainous as they may seem.

14) Trashin’ the Camp (Tarzan) – Senior year! So its senior year, second semester, and it’s kinda boring at this point. So what else is there to do, but trash the camp? I mean, not literally, but senior hijinks are kinda sorta maybe the same thing… right?

15) You’ll be in My Heart (Tarzan) – Kala adopts Tarzan and raises him, like the way Stamford High raised us. Stamford High is like a parent to us. No matter what, we will always remember Stamford High; it will always be in our heart. Once a Black Knight, always a Black Knight. No matter where we go, or what we do, Stamford High will always be a part of us.
