5 of SHS’s Most Famous Alumni

Located in the heart of Stamford, Connecticut, Stamford High School is a shining example of both community pride because we are better than Westhill, and academic distinction (because we are better than Westhill). The recent passing of Senator Joseph Lieberman brought attention to the fact that he was a notable SHS graduate (class of 1960). However, he isn’t alone – this school has shaped the lives of innumerable people throughout the years who have gone on to accomplish outstanding success in their chosen industries. From politics to athletics, journalism to acting, Stamford High School has a diverse alumni body whose achievements continue to inspire and impact audiences across the world. Here are a few examples:

 

 

Michael Dante, Class of ‘48

Michael Dante, a charismatic and adaptable actor, he became well known in Hollywood during the height of the motion picture industry. Dante, who was born under the name Ralph Vitti in Stamford, attended Stamford High School and fell in love with acting. Following graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to follow his aspirations and started a successful career in television and movies. Renowned for his parts in vintage Westerns like “Winterhawk” and “The Naked Kiss,” Dante’s skill and commitment to his work made him a member of Hollywood’s top tier stars. Fun fact this is Stamford high teacher Mike Buzzeo’s cousin.

 

 

Walter Kennedy, Class of ‘30

Walter Kennedy was a visionary leader and a powerful personality in the sports world who, as NBA commissioner, made important contributions to the league. Kennedy was born and raised in Stamford, Connecticut, and his love of basketball was sparked there at Stamford High School, where he excelled academically and on the basketball court. Following graduation, he became the NBA commissioner and was instrumental in determining the expansion and popularity of the league. Basketball fans all throughout the world continue to honor Kennedy’s leadership and commitment to the game.

 

 

Lois Long, Class of ‘18

A trailblazing journalist and cultural icon, Lois Long’s humor, charm, and daring writing style left an impact on the literary world. Long was raised in Stamford, Connecticut, and attended Stamford High School to further her love of journalism and develop her writing and editing abilities. Following graduation, she started a profitable job at The New Yorker, where she gained recognition for her groundbreaking articles capturing the exciting New York City nightlife of the roaring 20s. Writers and journalists are still motivated by Long’s creative approach to journalism.

 

Dannel Malloy, Class of ‘73

From 2011 until 2019, Dannel Malloy, a renowned leader and committed public servant, led Connecticut as governor. Malloy was raised in Stamford and received his early education at Stamford High School, which helped shape his dedication to public service. He pursued a career in politics and law after graduating, eventually rising to prominence as the state’s most powerful individual. Malloy dedicated his entire governorship to enhancing the quality of life for people of Connecticut, promoting reforms in the fields of healthcare, education, and criminal justice.

 

Johnny Scalzi, Class of ‘71

Johnny Scalzi is a trailblazing entrepreneur and philanthropist who has made a lasting impact on his community and the corporate world. Scalzi, a proud Stamford High School alum, showed an early sense of entrepreneurship. Over his career, Scalzi has always demonstrated his entrepreneurial passion and commitment to serving others. Through starting charity activities, endorsing local problems, or boosting the economy, Scalzi’s activities represent the principles taught at Stamford High School, motivating people to improve their communities. Scalzi has not only achieved success but also positively impacted the lives of others with his business smarts and dedication to give back. He also has a park named after him in Stamford.
