Child and teen stars, who are constantly being scrutinized by the public eye, have a knack for rebelling in extreme ways. Whether it’s because of the huge amount of pressure and expectations they live under or because they can’t grow up into who they want to be without severe criticism, they can usually be seen on the television, internet, and the cover of magazines acting out.
The latest teenage star that has crashed and burned, Miley Cyrus, has had the entire transformation closely documented by an entire nation. Starting in 2010 with her single “Can’t Be Tamed,” which was promoted with sexually-themed performances, her downfall was postponed when she took a break from her music career to pursue acting. In 2012 she drew lots of attention for cutting her hair short and dying it blonde. She changed record labels and released her single “We Can’t Stop” earlier this year. The new song was followed up with a provocative music video and a controversial performance at the VMA’s. It’s safe to say that Hannah Montana has gone to rest.
No matter how outrageous Miley’s stunts seem to be, she isn’t the only one this has happened to. Other stars that have experienced a public demise as teenagers are Drew Barrymore, Macaulay Culkin, Amanda Bynes, and Lindsay Lohan.
After acting in in E.T. as a six-year-old, Barrymore’s childhood was corrupted. She went to rehab for the first time when she was thirteen because she had already started to experiment with alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. The next year she attempted suicide and, as a teen, successfully filed for emancipation from her parents. She posed for Playboy Magazine and Interview before she finally straightened herself out.
Fourteen years after starring in Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin was arrested for possession of marijuana and two other controlled substances and is battling a heroin addiction. He hasn’t had a major acting role since 2009, despite his incredible success as a youth.
Amanda Bynes’ issues started in 2012 when she was charged with using her cellphone while driving, arrested for driving under the influence, charged for two alleged hit and runs, and driving with a suspended license. Early in 2013 Bynes was arrested for possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence. In July she was hospitalized for allegedly starting a small fire in her neighbors’ driveway and has since been asked to have her psychiatric hold extended for a year. Besides all of her legal issues, she is also infamous for her Twitter antics.
Perhaps one of the most famous childhood collapses of this generation has been that of Lindsay Lohan. Ever since 2006, she has been going in and out of rehab and court, she has been accused of excessive drug and alcohol use, and she has been estranged from her family.
These are only four examples of troubles faced by youths growing up in the spotlight; there are certainly numerous other instances. Whatever is causing these outbursts of rebellion and early exposure to drugs and alcohol is taking a serious toll, and is an issue that needs to be addressed.

what does this mean for our non-stardom goals in life?
what does having it all really mean?
