On Saturday March 21, news got out that two SPS principals may be moved to different schools against their will. Westhill’s principal Michael Rinaldi and Rogers International’s principal Cathleen Cummings both said they were told by current Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero that they may be moved to different schools and positions.
With all this going on, many speculated that Stamford High’s principal Matthew Forker may also be moved to another position. Forker remained quiet on the issue which led to some uncertainty as to whether he was being moved but regardless, the students of Stamford high and Westhill deemed Dr. Lucero’s plan was unacceptable and planned a student walk out for Tuesday, March 24, to have their voices heard.
But on Monday, March 23, news got out that the Stamford high walkout would be postponed to Thursday. But with such a short term notice many students were left confused about whether the walkout was still going to happen on Thursday and on that morning Forker sent an email to all students saying there was no need to walkout.
While some claim that with Mr. Forker saying there has been no notification if he would be moved; there was no need to walk out. But, the walkout isn’t just about defending our school’s principal, it’s having our voices heard. And even if Mr. Forker is in the clear, there has been no word on if the other principals are safe, so why not walkout for them?
Other than the other principals there is a reason to protest against the controversial schedule the superintendent carried out with and the possible removal of Stamford high’s athletic director, Chris Passamano. And if we don’t fight back against things like this, what is stopping them from continuing to take advantage of their power?
