The Last Jedi is the latest film in the Star Wars franchise, and it’s polarizing to say the least. Fans can’t come to a common consensus on the movie and frankly, neither can I. To start out there were many awesome scenes that made the movie really enjoyable and great to watch. Some scenes were just phenomenal, like the hyperspace jump through the ship, Rey and Kylo Ren’s fight with Snoke’s red guards, and the end sequence (a masterpiece). However, there were some problems with the films that even a hardcore Star Wars fan such as myself can’t just gloss over.
To start off, Snoke’s death was a big issue with some viewers. Snoke was hyped to be the big bad guy of this new trilogy, but ended up being tricked by Kylo Ren and cut in half with only about ten minutes of screen time in the whole movie. Needless to say, a lot of people were upset, but personally I kind of enjoyed that twist since everyone expected Snoke to survive and be the final villain – but there are definitely two sides of an argument to be had just around his death. Another scene which a lot of fans find ridiculous was Leia using the force in the vacuum of space, which also made zero to no sense. To top it all off, the beginning half of the film was very dragged out, especially during the casino (which really takes you out of the movie and just leaves you waiting for Finn and Rose to get off the planet).
Despite the hype around the character, Captain Phasma turns out to be another Boba Fett as she has very little screen time aside from her duel with Finn (which was spectacular). But her death at the end left us with the same feeling our green friend gave us when he fell into the sarlacc pit.
The first half of the film really makes the film feel like it’s dragging its feet, but when the second half comes, it hits the ground running. The pacing in the second half of the movie is a treat, with nonstop action and a phenomenal scene where Luke and Kylo Ren duke it out. Although Luke does “die” and becomes one with the force, I don’t think fans wanted him to die in any way that seemed disrespectful to the character, which is why I liked his death. Moving on through the characters, Adam Driver does a fantastic job as Kylo Ren, and the plot does a good job of making the audience feel sorry for him as a character. It’s very important for an antagonist to feel human as we all know. Daisy Ridley is just stunning in her performance of Rey and really captures the journey from a naive girl who knows nothing about the force to a Jedi in training who sees the world in a new light.
The most controversial character of this film would be Luke Skywalker, again played by Mark Hamill. Hamill does a great job bringing a sense of comedy and experience to the now older Luke Skywalker. However ,Luke’s actions regarding him almost killing Kylo Ren and him giving up on the Jedi order are extremely out of character, which was a big fan complaint that I agree with. The appearance of Yoda is a boost to the film, as it adds a bit of the nostalgia and fun the green dwarf always seems to bring with him. The ending of the film is very open; it feels empty, like we have no idea what is supposed to happen, and not because of a cliffhanger – we don’t have any leads on what is gonna happen in episode 9.
Despite all the controversy over the film, the positive of the film far outshines the negatives, with great space battles, epic light saber action, and great character development. The movie overall was fun, action-packed, and funny, despite some of the problems it faces. If you’re a Star Wars fan, this movie is a must see.
