Concert Review: LANY

Danielle Forrest, Staffwriter

Indie pop band, LANY, performed 3 sold out shows at Irving Plaza in New York City on October 13,14, and 15. LANY is a 3 piece band that was formed in Los Angeles around 2014. They recently came out with their debut, self-titled album on June 30, 2017. On their first sold out show I had to opportunity to see them with a good friend of mine.

To start off, the opening act DAGNY came out and got everyone to jump up and down. They put on a great live performance which made me instantly start loving their music. Their songs “Ultraviolet” and new single “Love You Like That” were a huge hit for the crowd and definitely for me too.

Once Dagny finished, LANY came out and performed their song “Dumb Stuff” to get the night started. Right as lead singer Paul Jason Klein started singing, the whole venue was filled with loud singing, dancing, and crying. I’m 100 percent sure just by the end of the first song on the setlist everyone’s voices were already gone.

After playing their song “Overtime”, singer Paul ran to the mic and said “This is the first time we’ve ever done 3 nights in a row in the same place. This is gonna be a night to remember”. Once he said this the crowd started yelling crazy because they for sure agreed this was most definitely going to be a night to remember.

Half way through the setlist, my favorite song, “Hurts” was played and after being able to hear them perform the song live, I realized that it was probably the most beautiful moment for me. Then out of nowhere Paul jumped into the crowd twice and and sang to us with great emotion. Him doing that really made the moment feel so incredible, it was such a memorable moment for every person in that crowd.

Near the end of the show, drummer Jake Gross’s drum broke. Once this happened Paul sat at his piano and started singing a small compilation of their songs until Jake’s drum was fixed. At this moment the whole venue was quiet and all you could hear was just Paul’s voice. It really great to experience that because I felt like we were all so engaged in that very moment.

LANY ended the night with one of their hit songs “ILYSB”. Throughout the whole song everyone was enjoying the end of this amazing experience with huge smiles on their faces, while dancing and singing. It was sad to know the concert was ending but you also had this incredible feeling inside of you like “Wow! This literally just happened!” After the end of the song, all 3 guys, Paul Jason Klein, Jake Gross, and Les Priest came to the front of the stage and thanked the whole crowd for being great fans and appreciating everyone for giving them this memorable night.
