Madrigal to Hold Open Tryouts

Gabriella Nique, Staff Writer

Many students at Stamford High are familiar with the talented group, the Madrigals. They are one of the many reasons why our school—and community—is so well rounded and exceptionally special. You’ve probably been delighted with their singing in the past, and have heard their refreshing takes on a capella.

Over the years this group has become a family to many Stamford High students and together they have brought us a well coordinated group whose talent, luckily, gets to be displayed on stage. During this past school year, however, the Madrigals had to say goodbye to many graduating members. Now they are in search of new students who would be open to joining their group. They will be holding tryouts tomorrow (September 12th) from 5 to 6 p.m. in room 402, and all are welcome to attend.

I spoke to the head of the Madrigals, Gloria Sinaguglia, and she said that “Being in the class would be best if students are not already in the music/choral program. Rehearsing only one night a week is definitely not enough time and isn’t fair to any of the members or myself. Being in the rehearsal is important and necessary. It’s a tight knit group which needs everyone.” Particularly with male students she added that, “Boys get interested in participating by the end of their junior year. They join and then are so disappointed that they didn’t start sooner because they love it so much.” The Madrigals are a gifted bunch, their environment is very upbeat, Sinaguglia described them as being “friendly, motivated, and welcoming. We work very hard and truly enjoy the product of our labor.” Currently, they are looking for members who not only are willing to try their best and take a chance, but who are committed and dedicated.

The group needs to be balanced between the four parts of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass and could use anywhere from two to four more members in each section. I spoke to senior Brianna Jean, who has been in the Madrigals all of her four years at Stamford High; she explained that an addition to the group—especially male vocalists—would allow them to perform more versatile pieces, as well as allow them to go beyond their creative vicinity. She also noted that joining members should be committed and passionate if they take part in the choir. Although being a part of the Madrigals is really fun, new members should be taking the choir seriously and be willing to do the work that comes along with the job of being apart of an a capella group. So, if you are a student at SHS who would like to take part in the Madrigals, then be sure to be there at tryouts!
