Boys’ Basketball Finishes Out a ‘Decent Season’

Kevin Fuller, Staff Writer

The Stamford High boys’ basketball team finished their season with 14 wins and 6 losses; they made an appearance in both the FCIAC playoffs and made it to the second round of the Connecticut class LL state tournament. Although they came up short of the championship, they had a very productive year.  I talked to four players on the team in order to reflect on the season; among these four were senior center Kwe Askew, senior guard Gianni Carwin, junior guard Jay DeVito and junior guard Yan Carlos Marte.

Askew said the season was decent, but also said, ‘’we didn’t accomplish all of our goals.”  When asked about his personal performance, Askew said he didn’t start off the way he liked, but by the end of the season he began to play to his abilities. Askew was named to first-team all-FCIAC, which is an honor very few people receive.  Askew is planning on playing basketball in college and he is going to visit schools like the University of Maine, Liu Brooklyn and Hartford University with hopes to further his basketball career.

Senior guard Gianni Carwin echoed Askew when asked about how the team did this season; he said they were did decent but didn’t play to their full skill level. Carwin feels that he personally had a good season, and always tried to make the most out of his opportunities.  He was selected to second team all-FCIAC and was a seriously gifted scorer in the conference as well. I asked Carwin what his most memorable moment was this past season; he said scoring 35 points on senior night was a very memorable experience. Carwin has hopes to continue his basketball career, and wants to attend a prep school before college in order to give himself a better chance.

Jay DeVito was a junior starter at guard this past season. Jay is known as “Jimmer’’ by many at Stamford High in reference to NBA star Jimmer Fredette who, much like Jay, is lethal behind the three point line. DeVito said, “We didn’t play to our expectations, but we still competed every night and made it to FCIAC and state playoffs. DeVito said that he personally could have shot the ball better than he did, but he felt improvement as an all around basketball player. DeVito says he feels they have a real chance at success if they improve defensively and work as a team to play to each other’s strengths.

Yan Carlos Marte is one of the most passionate basketball players around, and is expected to be a serious part of the team next season. I asked him what he feels about the past season and he was very optimistic, saying that he saw a lot of good in the team and sees a lot to build on for next year. He also stated that he is ready to work hard, and more than anything, ready to get buckets.

The Knights are hungry to win next year, and seem ready to make it happen.
