As we start to look forward to the holiday season, Black Knight Athletics turns our focus to those who are less fortunate in our community. To that end, and in keeping with our goals of community-based service, it’s time for the 5th annual Thanksgiving Dinner Drive. Over the past four years we have provided Thanksgiving meals to almost 650 homebound senior citizens throughout Stamford and to families in need right here at SHS. The goal is 200 more this year.
Once again, I am asking SHS faculty, staff, and coaches to sign up to provide all the “side dishes” (up to $20 worth) that go with a full Thanksgiving dinner. When someone signs up, we will assign them the side item to provide (could be boxes of stuffing, cans of gravy, mixed vegetables, cranberry sauce, boxed mashed potatoes, etc.) to match the number of gift cards we receive from families of Black Knight student athletes.
We are asking our families, if they have the means, to consider donating a $20 gift card from a local grocery store (with a deadline of Nov. 19th). These gift cards will serve as the “Turkey.” Gift cards can be dropped off at the front desk at any time during school hours.
On or about Nov. 19th, we will gather athletes from various teams to help assemble the “turkey” and all the “sides” to make a complete Thanksgiving dinner to go. We will put everything in a reusable shopping bag and distribute them.
With the help of staff and coaches, we will identify families that are in need and get Thanksgiving meals to them. In addition, we will also be working with Silver Source again (a Stamford based community organization that works as a safety net for Stamford’s homebound senior citizens) to make sure we help those in most need of some love and support this holiday season.
Andrena Forlenzo will be helping organize this year and items can be dropped off at her office.
