On Friday, December 11, Stamford High School held their first Homecoming Dodgeball Tournament in the Kuzco Gym at 6 p.m. 16 teams faced fierce competition with the Average Joe’s, led by the SHS Physical Education Department, who emerged as the champions. The Average Joe’s and the Mother Duckers played the final game.

Stephen Buckett, a member of the Average Joe’s team stated, “We had good momentum after beating the super seniors. We needed to win 4 straight games since we came from the loser’s bracket and we did.” The Average Joe’s strategy was to control possession, have good time management and target the weaker players.

The tournament was double elimination, meaning that you must lose two games to be eliminated.  However, if you lost one game, you were moved down to the loser’s bracket. The games were played in three two-minute periods with the third period split into one-minute halves. The teams also switched sides of the court after each period to ensure that no team had an advantage.

This tournament was organized by the sophomore and senior classes, but there were many other staff members who helped to make this event such a success.

Tiffany Clark, the senior class advisor, said, “It absolutely was [a success]. The parent turn-out was unexpected.” Clark also stated that this tournament wouldn’t have been possible without the help from teachers Matt Harbilas, Joe Cozza, Matt Gladstone, Todd Parness, Jeremy White and Jeanne Valentine.
