Last week on Saturday, February 7 the Associated Press reported that Sunghee Kwon, ex-wife of Raja A. Fayad, a popular physiology professor at the University of South Carolina shot and killed her husband before taking her own life.

Their bodies were found on the fourth floor of the Arnold Public Research Center. Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said an autopsy showed that Fayad died of complications from multiple gunshot wounds, while Kwon died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

No less than a week later, just up the road at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, three students were shot to death on Tuesday, February 10. Gunshots were reported after 5 p.m in the Finley Forest condominiums.

The victims have been identified  as Deah Barakat, 23, a second-year student in UNC’s School of Dentistry; his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, who planned to begin her dental studies in the fall; and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, a student at North Carolina State University.

According to Chapel Hill Police, 46-year-old Craig Stephan Hicks has been arrested today, February 11 on three counts of first degree murder. While the investigation is still ongoing, police are also looking into the possibility of whether the murders were a hate crime, since all three victims were Muslim.

Students have been taking to social media to express their feelings, and their very adamant on sticking together, mourning the losses and not resting until justice is served.
