Stamford youth basketball teams and members of the Stamford Police Department’s Police Activities League (PAL) came together on Friday, Nov. 1, to play a game of basketball and build relationships between the teens and officers.
The second annual Building Bridges Basketball Tournament was held at Westhill High School. The participating teams were the Stamford High School and Westhill High School basketball teams as well as the Stamford police officers playing for PAL.
In addition to raising money for PAL and the two high schools, the friendly competition also encouraged community-building. SHS basketball coach Daniel Lauture said, “This event was more than just a game; it provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships, foster understanding, and build trust between our youth and local officers.”
Lauture also mentioned that “Young people can see police not as a source of help or public service but might see them as a hindrance or someone who’s there to cause trouble in their lives, or disrupt their lives.”
He added that he was “looking forward to more events like this that promote open conversations and stronger bonds across Stamford.” These stronger bonds are going to build relationships within the community, providing support and guidance for the youth.
Plus, as Lauture offered, it is “A great way to show the union of both sides of public officials.”
