The 62nd annual Grammy Awards was held on January 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles where many awards were given out to top music artists. Billie Eilish in particular stood out from the rest. Out of the nominees who won, Billie Eilish a famous music artist, left with five awards out of the six awards she was nominated for that night.

Billie Eilish is an 18-year-old American singer and songwriter. She started gaining popularity with her hit song ‘Ocean Eyes’ that she uploaded on SoundCloud. The only intention she had for uploading this song was for her dance teacher to hear the song. However, soon after this upload, she found her song had gone viral on the streaming platform. The song heightened and registered more than 10 million hits within a short period of time. She was only 14 years old at the time when her song went viral. Billie Eilish wrote and recorded this song in her bedroom for fun and after it went viral, it caught the ear of the recording industry. From there she signed with the Darkroom and Interscope Records.

It has been 4 years since that fateful SoundCloud recording, and she has definitely come along way. You may know some of her other hits that she has produced in the past years such as, ‘Bellyache’, ‘Bored’ (which was included in the official soundtrack of the Netflix series ‘13 Reasons Why’), ‘Watch’, ‘Copycat’, and ‘Bury a Friend’. She also had the opportunity to collaborate with top artist, Khalid with their single ‘Lovely’ which was released in mid-2018. 

Unlike today’s top musical artists, Billie’s songs often venture in a more dark lyrical territory. Despite her different and unique twist in her songs, she is still able to draw the attention of many listeners and allowing her to top the charts. Her music videos and performances match her dark lyrical style. From black liquid pouring out of her eyes to smearing makeup across her face Billie’s music videos are undoubtedly very animated and nightmarish yet still attract many viewers. These songs and videos possess a deep meaning and emotional connection. Most of her songs were written during a time in her life when she didn’t have self love, she stated, therefore explains the dark, depressing, and sad overall tone of the music and lyrics. A big reason to Billie’s popularity is that she is able to connect and relate to many listeners with this darker style in music. Her songs touch on aspects in life that are deeper than the average song. 

It is clear to see why Billie Eilish is an extremely talented artist. This hard work and talent allowed her to win five awards during the Grammys this year. Billie Eilish has a bright future at only eighteen, and we for sure will be able to see her grow as an artist in the years to come.
