The Food We Miss in College

Alex Grabar, Writer

It’s that time of year where seniors are getting accepted into colleges. Some are going across the country, while some are staying within the tri-state area. However, all of them will have that craving for food that you can’t find anywhere else besides Stamford or Fairfield County. When we asked some students what food place they would miss most, Donut Delight and Reddi Rooster topped the list.  But there were plenty of other favorites.

“I would miss Casa Villa. They make the best tacos de chorizo, which is my favorite kind of food,” said senior Bianca Gonzalez. Casa Villa is a Mexican restaurant located in downtown Stamford and serves one of the best tacos in all of Connecticut.

With Stamford being one of the most diverse cities in the state, there’s a wide variety of restaurants, including the Village Table, which is located on Hope Street in the Springdale neighborhood. Springdale is notorious for having great delis, and senior Joey Price explained why the Village Table is his favorite. “The Crusader is my go-to; eating it always brightens up my mood,” said Price. An egg and cheese with steak, and hash browns on a roll – that just sums up why it’s a great mood-changer.

On the other end of Hope Street is another Latin American restaurant, Mi Ranchito. “I would always have a craving for their authentic arroz de chaufa,” said senior Jonathan Alvarez. You can never go wrong with an authentic taste of your own nationality’s food, especially when you’re stuck in your college campus for the semester.

In another example of how widespread the diversity is in Stamford, the Maya Restaurant is also a Latin American restaurant located in the Stillmeadow neighborhood of Stamford. Senior Orlando Coronado explained how the food there is “like food my family would make in Guatemala.” Yet another craving for homegrown foods shows why Stamford is a great place to go out for a bite.

Last but not least is the almighty pizza joint of Stamford that is Colony Grill pizza. This is one cannot be debated, as it has the best “hot oils” in all of Fairfield County. Junior Matthew Tiplady can tell you that too: “I’d say it’s by a long run the best hot oil in the state,” Tiplady said.

As many of us will be in college one day, where there can be long nights of studying, Netflix, or partying, everyone will eventually begin get some sort of craving for food from our home Stamford. Colleges may have great food options as well, but it’s no Colony. Nothing beats the authentic, flavorful, and notorious restaurants of Stamford.
