Honoring the Life of Custodian Calvin Durant

Lejla Music, Staff Writer

On August 28th,  Stamford High lost one of its very own staff members to a heart attack on the 9th floor. Custodian Calvin Durant was working by himself on the 9th floor when he collapsed all of a sudden. A fellow custodian found him and called for help. EMT’s tried to resuscitate him, but he had already sadly passed.

Calvin Durant passed away on the ninth floor of Stamford High School while working on August 28.

Calvin Durant was a devoted custodian at Stamford High.  Durant was born in Virginia and lived there with his family before he came to Stamford. He was a family man and had visited his kids in Virginia recently before his passing. He heard about a custodial job at
Stamford High from his friend and fellow custodian James Manning. Manning described him as quiet and very nice; they clocked out together every day for work. He had a close relationship with Manning, and they were friends even before they started working together. “He was
like a brother to me,” Manning said.

The Stamford High staff had nothing but kind words to say about Durant.  Security guard James Jordan described him as a very dedicated guy. “He loved to go to work!”Jordan exclaimed.

Principal Raymond Manka was especially saddened; he spoke about seeing and knowing Durant even before being principal of SHS. “Calvin was a good man, always had a joke and a smile. He was someone who enjoyed his job and did it to stay active. It was sad to see him go at Stamford High.”

Calvin Durant was 77 years old, and will be greatly missed by the SHS community.  We send our condolences to the Durant Family.
