‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Wins Big at Tony Awards
June 13, 2017
The Tonys happened! On Sunday, June 11, Kevin Spacey took the stage of the Beacon Theater and put on a great show as host.
One good thing about the show was that they don’t show all the less prominent awards, which would annoy people greatly. The Tony’s feature many awards such as “Best Scenic Design in a play,” and for the most part, people don’t care.
I thought the awards given were fair. Dear Evan Hansen took the most awards home, winning 6 Tonys, including Best Musical. The play Hello Dolly! won four, while Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet, The Little Foxes, Indecent, and Oslo each won two awards.
I was actually fortunate enough to be able to see Dear Evan Hansen, and I have to say, it deserved every win. Granted, I haven’t seen the other musicals that were nominated (though I definitely plan on it), but I still believed it still deserved all of its wins.
The show featured performances from all the musicals, and also featured some great moments, including many impressions by Kevin Spacey, which included former President Bill Clinton, legendary late night host Johnny Carson, and his own character from the Netflix series House Of Cards, Frank Underwood. It also featured many hilarious openings and presenters, most notably Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, who went to Broadway this year with their two-man play, Oh Hello: On Broadway, which featured them playing two older gentlemen who live in an apartment together in New York City.
