Boys Lacrosse: Season Recap
June 13, 2017
Historically, Stamford has never really been known for our dominant lacrosse programs. With top teams in the nation such as Darien and Greenwich playing in the FCIAC with us, it is tough for us to really shine. Captains Dylan Fyffe, Stefan Jones, Ryan Holbrook, and Scott Moreau were the leaders of the team along with other key players stepping up throughout the season. The Knights fed off the energy of veteran head coach Michael Nazzaro. Coach Nazz helped to keep spirits high despite a few losing streaks.
When asked about how he kept the team’s heads up despite the losses Nazz said, “The key was learning from our mistakes instead of dwelling on them.” Nazzaro was recognized for his sportsmanship on the sidelines, winning the 2017 Western Connecticut Lacrosse Officials Association Sportsmanship Award.
The team finished with a 3-8 FCIAC record and 4-10 overall. One of the best moments for the team was beating Brandford in overtime. Junior defenseman Brendan Fahey said “It was a thrilling comeback and I was glad to be part of such a great game. We stepped up and made big plays at the end, it was nice to come out on top.”
The highlight of the season for the Knights was defending their title of “City Champion”. Last year, the Knights easily swept the competition while being powered by its senior leadership. This year wasn’t going to be as easy. On April 27, the Knights played the first leg of the City Championship across town at Westhill. The Knights were on a five game skid at the time, but were determined to get off the schneid. The game was a nail-biter that included highlights like Matthew Doyle’s bone-crushing hit on a Westhill player and Dylan Schneider’s doorstep goal while getting hit. The Knights escaped with a 7-6 victory. Now the only thing in the way of yet another City title was Trinity Catholic.
On May 4, Trinity paid the Knights a visit at Boyle Stadium. Riding the momentum from the Westhill games a few weeks ago, the Knights came out hot against TC in front of the Black Knight faithful. They rolled to a 13-3 drubbing of the Crusaders as they regained the title belt for another season.
After winning the city championship, the Black Knights had the hardest part of their schedule coming up. With powerhouses such as Staples, Trumbull, New Canaan, and Darien, Stamford High had its work cut out for them to make the state tournament. The Black Knights fell short of its goal has they lost their last six games.
The Knights return their hard-hitting defense with Fahey and Doyle being juniors. Also, they will have to lean heavily on its young goaltender Baylor Bridges. Coach Nazz believes the team will certainly improve into next season thanks to the young talent coming out of the local youth programs. He told reporter Jacob Koester, “I feel the younger players will make an impact on the whole team because their presence will make the veterans work harder to keep their positions.”
