Boys' Basketball Over Christmas Break

During the break, while the rest of us were enjoying Christmas and the New Year, the Stamford high boys’ basketball team was on the court battling it out against some non-FCIAC teams.

In the first match-up the boys traveled to Newtown to take on the Nighthawks. The Knights were tested throughout the game due to the defense played by Newtown. They played a triangle and two defense in order to stop the Knights leading scorers; seniors Jay DeVito and Yan Carlos Marte.

Without the point production from DeVito and Marte the Knights leaned on the back of junior guard Nico Laveris who scored 34 points hitting 5 three point field goals to lead the knights to a 70-64 win in overtime.

Last weekend the boys participated in the annual Kuczo Christmas tournament at Brien McMahon high school. In the first match-up the Black Knights fell to Joel Barlow high school 51-47.

The Knights were leading through the first half and were playing stellar defense however, they struggled with putting the ball in the basket the entire game. DeVito led the scoring for the knights with a team high 18 points. In the second half, the Falcons offense caught fire as their leading scorer, Matt McGannon, was able to nearly single handedly secure his team the win with a game high 35 points.

In their second and final game of the tournament Stamford high was able to improve there record to 3-1 with a 59 – 46 win over Weston high school. The whole team evenly contributed to the win as Nico Laveris (14) Jay DeVito (13) Yan Carlos Marte(13) and Tevin St. John(9) all scored with ease in the teams win over the Trojans. The team played extremely well together and clicked on all cylinders in the win.

The team will take on the New Canaan Rams tonight to start FCIAC play.
