Allegations of Owners’ Racist Remarks Shock The NBA World

Clippers owner Donald Sterling is currently under investigation for expressing racial thoughts in a conversation with his girlfriend, V. Stiviano. TMZ Sports was the first to obtain and release audio of a conversation between Sterling and Stiviano, held in what is believed to be in their home. Sterling was furious at Stiviano, who (ironically) is half black and Mexican, for posting pictures on Instagram of herself with black people: more specifically, Magic Johnson.

Sterling expressed that he didn’t want Stiviano to be seen with black people at Clippers games, or even bring black people with her to the games.

In the audio released by TMZ Sports, you can hear Sterling saying, “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?”

Has Sterling never looked around an arena while his beloved Clippers are playing? Does he not realize that the crowd is made up of a mixture of people from every race? Does he not take into consideration that his team has black players on it?  Apparently not.

The website Deadspin released an extended version of the TMZ Sports audio. In this audio, Stiviano asks him “Do you know that you have a whole team that’s black, that plays for you?” What Sterling says is shocking:

“You just, do I know? I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have- Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?

Is Sterling inferring that he owns the players? That they are his property.

If not his intention, it makes it sound pretty convincing that he believes that everything his players have is a direct result of him; therefore, he can treat time however he pleases.

In the extended audio he compares blacks to dogs, saying that “You go to Israel, the blacks are just treated like dogs.”

Sterling went on to inform his girlfriend that there are white Jews, and black Jews, repeatedly asking if she understands.

Stiviano says that she does understand, but she has one more question, one more question that really shows just how racist Sterling is (and therefore unfit to be an owner of a professional basketball team).

“And are the black Jews less than the white Jews?” – Stiviano

“A hundred percent, fifty, a hundred percent.” – Sterling

Now with this conversation making national headlines, it makes sense that NBA superstar and (“Instagram famous”) Magic Johnson reads up a little bit on this on-going controversy.

Although Stiviano deleted the picture of herself and Johnson, that doesn’t mean he should be counted out of the equation.

Talk of Johnson acquiring the new role as owner of the LA Clippers is no rumor. League sources told Yahoo Sports that “Magic’s absolutely interested.”

The NBA has released a plan.

As an exit strategy, Sterling could walk away with a 1$ billion-plus sale for his franchise. And maybe to slightly save whatever reputation he doesn’t have anymore, clear the way for Johnson to take over.

In the end, Sterling really has no choice. Never again will be able to sit courtside or march through his locker room before a game. All the reasons Sterling loved owning an NBA team – the fame, the money and the extra privileges, and clearly not the team itself – have now gone out the window.
