On December 5th, Stamford High hosted an Awards Knight for all of the fall athletes. Captains, players, coaches, parents, and the Athletic Council joined together in the auditorium to celebrate the closing of the fall season. Members of teams were recognized for their incredible accomplishments including; MVP, Coaches Award, Student Athlete Award, and making both the All-FCIAC and All-State teams. The night also introduced one of the Athletic Council’s accomplishments: the new Stamford High flag.
The Athletic Council is a new committee put together by various teachers that help the athletic community as a whole. Just this year they have accepted four new members versus the past two. Mike Costello, senior, is a member on the Athletic council and said, “On the Athletic Council we are trying to make everyone a union.” He, among other members, organized and voted on details for the event, including decorations and awards. Costello says, “The event was fun; everyone was very happy and excited… our main goal was to make sure that other fall teams know and recognize what the other teams do.”
Football team member Jamal Barrett, senior, said, “Tonight’s event was important for commending other teams’ accomplishments. We want to act as role models even though we didn’t have the best record.” Barrett was “happy to see that the Athletic Council was doing great things for our school.” He says, “Now that we have seen what the fall sports had to offer, we are going to prepare more for winter and spring sports.”
James Moriarty, Stamford High’s Athletic Director, was the first to institute the Awards Knight beginning last year. He said, “The reason why I did this was because I wanted more recognition for our athletes, previously if you were the field hockey MVP the only people who knew about it was the field hockey team.” He was pleased with the results of the event mainly because there was more support from other teachers, parents and students for the ceremony. Moriarty said, “[the Athletic Council’s achievements] is what brought out the positives of Stamford High.” In the future Moriarty plans to work along side the Athletic Council to get a Varsity Room for all teams to use.
Athletes are now looking forward to the winter and spring awards nights. Stamford High has certainly made great improvements and surely we will see a brighter future not only in the school but especially in the athletic community.
