Record Breaking Day in the NFL

Record Breaking Day in the NFL

In light of one of what is being called “the best day in NFL history,” it’s only appropriate to go through a run-down of the events that took place in week 14.

The NFL is known as one of the stand-alone sports that play in bad weather. This was greatly seen Sunday December 7  in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and Pittsburg. Winds created small snow drifts and blizzard like conditions in many of the stadiums causing poor vision for the players. Dropped balls, slipping players and incomplete passes were all too common on the field.

With that said, the games went on, and in a crazy fashion. The NFL set a single-day record for touchdowns with an astonishing 87 touchdowns! The recap of these plays can be seen here: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-redzone-videos/0ap2000000294882/RedZone-Recap-Week-14

Every team in the league had managed to get 6 points on the board, yes even the Jets. Geno Smith threw his first touchdown pass since week 7, which was before Thanksgiving.

On a more personal level, Eddie Lacy, a rookie running back for the Green Bay Packers, broke the franchise rookie record Samkon Gado had held since 2005 for the most rushing touchdowns. He carried for a total of 20 times and racked up 55 yards. Matt Prater, the kicker for the Denver Broncos, also made earthshattering history connecting for a 64 yard field goal.

He now stands alone with the NFL’s longest field goal. A short clip of the kick can be seen here: http://bcove.me/r2q1xuw1

The Pittsburg Steelers were literally inches away from beating the Miami Dolphins with an insane 5 pass lateral play. A quick clip of the play can be seen here: http://nesncom.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/steel1.gif  Sadly, the play was short lived as Antonio Brown made his way down the sideline and stepped out of bounds by just a pinky toe. With zero seconds on the clock there was nothing they could do, and the play that left all fans in awe would stand alone has a last ditch effort.

It can be said that whoever you are, a football fan or not, these records and insane weather conditions could catch anyone’s eye, and they should really make you respect these athletes and their abilities. Only one can imagine what week 15 will hold.
