Stamford High Volleyball Team Is City Champions Once Again

After defeating Trinity Catholic just a few weeks ago, the Stamford High volleyball team took down Westhill this past Friday to become city champions for the second consecutive season. Though the match began as a nail-biter, the Knights proceeded to sweep the Vikings three games to none, delivering a crushing blow to the city rivals on their senior night.

Senior middle-hitter and co-captain, Brianna Gordon who experienced the jubilation felt on the Stamford High sideline following the victory, spoke of what it meant for her team to be back on top: “To be able to be city champs two years in a row is amazing,” Gordon explains. “We worked really hard all season to get better and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

Junior middle-hitter, Anne Margaret Eilertsen, agreed that the team has improved greatly over the course of the season. “We work hard in practice every day and work hard to push each other to get better and better.” Gordon added, “We work as a team and that’s what has helped us become the team that we are today.” Undoubtedly, all the success that the team has met can be attributed to their unparalleled teamwork.

But although the regular season is over and Stamford High can proudly call themselves city Champions, the volleyball team’s greatest challenges are still to come.“We want to work hard during FCIACs and then move on and make a run in the states,” Eilertsen says, but Gordon wisely reminds us, “We want to take it one game at a time.”

The team faces a dominating Darien team this Monday in the FCIAC play-offs, and we can only hope that our Knights will once again come out on top. Above all one thing can be certain: we have not heard the last of this victorious program.
