White Accepts Another Coaching Position
September 6, 2013
A week before school started, Mr. White was informed by Vice Principal Mr. Forker and athletic director Mr. Moriarty that no one had applied for the position as head coach of the girls’ soccer team. At that point, Mr. Van Acker and Mr. Cozza, both more than qualified to be the head coach, were each unable to take the position. Mr. White, though having no prior experience with soccer, is very familiar with being a head coach, and is completely capable of helping lay the foundation for years to come.
In taking the position as head coach for the girls’ soccer team, White faces different challenges than when he was head coach for the boys’ lacrosse team just two seasons ago. In an interview with The Round Table, White explained how coaching girls is so different from coaching boys: “The girls are easier to coach. They listen better, work just as hard, and are more organized,” he said.
According to White, the biggest challenge for the team will be getting “numbers.” He wants to take this year to set a strong foundation and get more girls involved in the youth programs so that in the upcoming years more girls will already be enthusiastic about the program. For all the underclassmen on the girls soccer team, don’t worry; Coach White is in it for the long run. “It’s not just a one year thing; the girls don’t need another stop gap coach,” he said.
