New Nike Air Mags
November 10, 2015
Sneakers have become special within the fashion community, but no sneaker has had more interest than the Nike Air Mags that are set to be released sometime next year via auction to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
What makes this sneaker so special isn’t just its cause and meaning to the movie Back to the Future, but that it implements a revolutionary technology: the sneaker laces itself.
Prices for this extraordinarily manufactured sneaker are expected to go up to $20,000, with all the proceeds going to Fox’s foundation. This foundation raises money to fund research for Parkinson’s disease, a life-threatening disease that affects the nervous system.
The sneaker was first featured in the popular sci-fi movie Back to the Future II starring a young Michael J. Fox. Fox’s character, Marty, stepped into the shoe, which allowed him to use the hover boards that were available at the time, which happened to be in the year 2015. Even though we don’t have the hover boards or flying cars that are portrayed in the movie, we will have the self-lacing sneaker Marty sported in the movie.
This isn’t the first time the general public has seen the famous sneaker; in 2011, Nike auctioned off an Air Mag model which featured the same shoe, but no self-lacing technology. From the auction held for the 2011 model, Nike raised $9.6 million to benefit Fox’s foundation. With the sneaker expected to hit such higher prices, the 2016 Air Mags are estimated to rack in a whopping $20 million for the foundation.
