The Apple Watch: What is it?

Lauren Mitchell, Staff Writer

The Apple Watch, which will be available in early 2015, is Apple’s first foray into the smartwatch industry. It starts at $349 dollars and will introduce a bunch of new features including a designated health app that measures your heart rate and calories burned, the Apple Pay system which stores your credit card information for quick, hands free, payments, and an entirely new operating system crafted to work in tandem with the iPhone.

Unique to the Apple Watch, the digital connect feature allows the wearer to send drawings, emoticons, and even voice messages to other Apple Watch users.  However, you will need either an iPhone 5, 5c, 6, or 6 Plus to use most of its functionality. As such, Apple has designed the watch to connect to your iPhone’s Wi-Fi and GPS tracking system to pinpoint your location and receive notifications from your iPhone.  It also uses Apple’s state-of-the-art capacitive touch screen that recognizes the difference between a subtle tap and a defined press.

The Apple Watch will have various levels of customization to choose from. Apple has split the Apple Watch into 3 categories: the standard Apple Watch for regular day-to-day use, the Apple Watch Sport with a comfortable fluroelastomer band for fitness purposes, and the Apple Watch Edition which touts an 18-karat gold casing and a more luxurious strap.

One of the more eccentric features of the Apple Watch is the Digital Crown, which is a dial on the right side of the watch that allows the user to zoom in and out of applications without having to touch the screen.  Additionally, the Apple Watch has a dedicated sleep/wake button akin to its iPhone companion.

Apple hasn’t given too many details on the specific release date or battery life of the device, but that information will surely be revealed over the next few months leading up to its 2015 release.
