Why You Shouldn’t Waste Your Vote on Gary Johnson
November 2, 2016
The road to the 2016 Presidential Election could be described, simply, as a zoo.
This zoo includes an uncensored elephant and a sickly donkey. This year seems like the perfect opportunity for a more competent animal to rise, like a zebra or a lion. In fact, there has been a third contender to gain popularity this year, and that is the porcupine. This porcupine is former New Mexico governor, Gary Johnson, of the Libertarian Party. But his stumbles on television have raised questions about his chances in this race. His campaign has garnered support from voters unwilling to vote for Clinton or Trump; but maybe they should learn about Johnson before casting that vote.
Johnson’s flaws were first made apparent during his appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” Amidst a bombardment of questions from the panel, Mike Barnicle asked the Libertarian candidate what he would do about Aleppo (the ancient Syrian city under siege– a key battleground in the Syrian Civil War) if he were elected president. Johnson responded by asking, “And what is Aleppo?” A mystified Barnicle asked Johnson, “Are you serious?”
A week after this situation, Johnson was on MSNBC again for an interview with Kasie Hunt. He was answering a question about his participation in the next presidential debate and in the middle of his response, he questionably stuck his tongue out of his mouth and continued talking. This bizarre situation obviously did not help his campaign.
Of course, one slip up from Johnson could be overlooked; but Johnson had another “Aleppo moment.” Again on MSNBC, Johnson and his running mate, William Weld, were featured on a town hall style interview with host Chris Matthews. Matthews simply asked Johnson to name his favorite foreign leader. A panicked Johnson came up with one foreign leader who is deceased. Mathews then specified saying he wanted him to pick a living foreign leader. Johnson was unable to name even one. Johnson joked, “I guess I’m having an Aleppo moment,” but a peeved off Matthews was not having it. Weld named many leaders before Johnson finally named Angela Merkel, the president of Germany. Johnson’s questionable remarks should impact people who are resorting to vote for him.
All I ask is that you do not vote for Gary Johnson. A vote for Johnson is essentially a vote for Donald Trump. If you are so adamant about voting for neither Trump nor Clinton, just look around for the facts. Look past the ongoing scandals for both candidates and focus on what the candidates plans on doing if they are elected president. A vote for Gary Johnson is a waste of a vote. If you refuse to vote for a Democrat or a Republican, you might as well take advantage of the write-in option and put down your own name.
