The current news in the entertainment industry, domestic and foreign, is the controversy over the seemingly sudden change to the Batman persona. It was recently announced that award-winning actor and director, Ben Affleck, will be taking over the role as Gotham’s hero in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel. However, the announcement is causing die-hard Christian Bale fans to clash with those who would like to see a new face to the Dark Knight character.

Actor and good friend of Affleck, Matt Damon, defends his former co-writer by stating “It will be terrific. I know there are a lot of people grousing on the Internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear, its Batman!” According to the Twitter universe, however, Affleck playing Batman is a less than stellar choice. After the official statement about Affleck playing the Dark Knight, 71% of tweets in the first hour contributed to a cyber uproar bashing Affleck left and right.

Personally, I am going to side with Mr. Damon on this one. Although I understand and respect the points being made by those who don’t favor Affleck playing their favorite superhero, I believe he will do the role justice. Yes, Christian Bale is Batman…in the Dark Knight series. Ben Affleck is staring in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel. I am accepting of the idea that this is a different series; therefore, why not have a different face to the Caped Crusader?

I think that those who are up in arms about this decision should rest their aggravation until the movie is released publicly. Let’s not forget who is playing the role here. Ben Affleck is an award-winning actor. He has starred in and directed award-winning movies such as The Town, Good Will Hunting, and Argo, and has received praise all over the globe for his work. This is not some wash-up actor landing his first gig in an unfitting role. Affleck sure hasn’t let me down, and I highly doubt he will as Batman. I think the skeptics should relax, and see the movie when it comes out before losing their hair over the situation.

In my humble opinion, Ben Affleck is a superb actor. I believe he fits the persona of Batman excellently, and will make all of the Christian Bale die-hard supporters second-guess their lack of confidence in him. He has proven that he has the ability and talent; now it is only a matter of how the character will suit him. Personally, I think that Ben Affleck is indeed the hero Gotham, and Metropolis, deserves.
