An Interview with the Teacher of the Year
May 2, 2016
Every year, Stamford Public Schools selects a few of the teachers nominated for “Spotlight On Teacher” awards to compete for the title of “Teacher of the Year.” The Teacher of the Year award is given to teachers who are recognized for outstanding teaching, exceptional student support, exemplary community involvement, and for having a positive influence on school culture. All of the nominees are teachers who have distinguished themselves in their profession. A committee assessed 60 candidates who were nominated by their peers.
This year we are honored to have one of our own Stamford High teachers, Gloria Sinaguglia, awarded Teacher of the Year. She was recognized for her professional skill and contributions to the Stamford community. Mrs. Sinaguglia, as most of us know her, is a well-respected music teacher and is well-loved by her students.
The Round Table interviewed Sinaguglia with some questions about being named Teacher of the Year:
Question: What are the next steps to being teacher of the year?
Sinaguglia: I have to go on and apply to run for State Teacher of Year, and I have to chair the committee for the next two years. That’s all I know so far.
Question: How did you feel going against another music teacher [SHS music teacher George Beratis was also a finalist]?
Sinaguglia: I felt awkward. It was an uncomfortable situation, but it was also fun. I love him like my son; I was wishing him the best the whole time! We make a great team.
Question: What was your initial reaction to winning?
Sinaguglia: I was very surprised; it was a great uplifting feeling. It was also a difficult day due to the fact that I was at a funeral, so getting good news was good for all of us.
Question: Over the years, can you remember any students who were special to you?
Sinaguglia: That is a very hard question because all of them are very special in their own way. Not because they are outstanding performers, but because they are outstanding people. But one student that stood out over the years was Chris O’Neill [O’Neill is currently starring in “Book of Mormon” on Broadway].
Question: Who nominated you?
Sinaguglia: Mr. Beratis nominated me for the Spotlight Award and Mrs. Chacra nominated me for Teacher of the Year, which I didn’t know.
Question: Have you taught at Stamford High for your whole teaching career?
Sinaguglia: I have taught in Stamford the whole time, but not only at Stamford High.
Question: Now that you are Teacher of the Year, are you going to make any demands?
Sinaguglia: No, absolutely not. It’s a great school and I love being here!
