Starting this upcoming fall at Stamford High School, there will be a new program to help students achieve more success. The program is to help struggling students coming in the following years by training upperclassman. Juniors are currently being trained for the program, and will begin mentoring starting next year.

The Pyramid of Success is a type of leadership program to make students become leaders to teach others when they need the help. The Pyramid of Success contains ideas from the book Wooden on Leadership by John Wooden. The key focus is on how to achieve success and help others. With the Pyramid of Success, the program will attempt to not only help struggling students, but also try to reduce the number of discipline problems at school and make it safer.

A select group of students will be picked from each grade every year to become mentors for their fellow students. The students picked will be those who seem to be able to help the most with those students who are having trouble in their studies. Students who are in high-level classes, such as AP or honors, will be selected to be trained in the program. In the program the students will learn about leadership and success to be able to help those students who could use the extra help.

The Pyramid of Success is a highly regarded program, and many have high hopes for it. Some students are very pleased to hear such a program is being started because they believe it will better the school. “I believe it’s an overall good idea because it will help students who need help but are not able to seek it,” said junior Ibrahima Diallo. “It will help students who are struggling in school and can give them a better outlook,” said junior Jason DeAndressi. The Pyramid of Success could be just what is needed to help those who struggle, and who need a helping hand from fellow peers. The intentions of the Pyramid of Success are to better the school overall and help improve the school’s overall image.

“We want to create an environment similar to how you would feel at home. At home you want to take care of things around you. We want Stamford High to be a safe environment for students to be able to feel comfortable and learn without complications,” said Dean of Students Raphael Escobar.
