As many students know, the student parking lot is a dangerous place. Every day, over 100 students and teachers search for parking spots – a process that has become incredibly difficult because the lines outlining parking spaces had faded over decades of use. Many would agree that if you you’ve never parked at Stamford High before (unless you’re a student or teacher), then don’t try it.
Senior class president Brendan George has made it his goal to have all the lines in the student parking lot repainted by the end of this school year. With two years of driving experience at Stamford High, George can attest for the un-organization and chaos of the parking lot. “With a mix of students, teachers, and outside events occupying the parking lot, there needs to be a change,” George commented.
George is part of the Student Advisory Council, a group of high school level leaders from Stamford who meet to discuss issues and find solutions. As part of the council, George has direct contact with the Board of Education to which he has proposed his plan on repainting the lines of the parking lot. Dr. Valentine has shown her support of the idea by filing a request to the Board of Education. According to George, Dr. Valentine believes the project may not be completed by the end of the school year.
As this is George’s last year at Stamford High, he is determined to get the lines repainted by graduation, despite the lengthy government process. George told the Round Table it is important to accomplish this venture, “to demonstrate that students’ voices are heard. Getting this done will inspire future students to speak up.”
While on the topic of the parking lot, George added that he also does not believe seniors should have priority parking because students appreciate having such a large parking lot. The seniors and juniors get along well in the parking lot, so it is not necessary.
