An explosion in North Stamford caused by a propane tank leveled one house and caused
severe damages to the surrounding houses yesterday afternoon around 1:50 pm. No one
suffered any severe injuries, but one person was hospitalized and put under observation.
The explosion was almost as if a bomb went off, followed by a giant fireball. According
to the Stamford Advocate, parts of the house were found in trees along the street and the
house was on fire for about an hour until firefighters were able to put it out. There were many
different firefighters there including on-duty, on-duty volunteer, off-duty volunteer and a New
Canaan tanker truck.
“I thought a plane hit my house,” Charlene Heffernan, who lives nearby on Webbs Hill
Road, told the Advocate. “I have never heard anything so loud. My house shook from the top
Students at nearby West Hill high school say the building shook, with a couple of
windows blown out. Another house collapsed nearby where the first responders thought that
the blast had originated, according to the Advocate.
“The water came out of my neighbor’s pool because of the explosion” said Kaden
Bouldin, a senior at Stamford High who lives close to the scene of the explosion.
Guiseppe “Joe” Cardillo, 54-year-old owner of the house, was the only one home and
had no apparent injuries. He declined medical attention but was taken to Stamford hospital for
observation in case of internal injuries. According to the Stamford Advocate, a neighbor was
home at the time of the explosion, and helped steer first responders to the scene through 911
dispatchers.
