A School Year for the Books
June 13, 2016
As we approach the end of the school year, it is time that we look back at all of the great things we have accomplished this past year. From in the classroom to on the athletic field, Black Knights have accomplished great feats.
Let’s start with accomplishments in the classroom:
- This year we welcomed in the class of 2019, and will say goodbye to the class of 2016.
- Stamford High seniors have gotten into some excellent schools. Some highlights include Andrew Young attending Cornell University, Madison Johnson attending the University of Pennsylvania, Shaina Lubliner attending Duke University, Klara Hoherchak attending the University of Virginia, Namrata Ramakrishna attending Dartmouth College, Jenn Krupa attending Tufts University and Erin Maher attending the University of Michigan.
- Senior Matthew Sieh was a National Merritt Scholar Finalist.
- SHS Juniors participated in the first New SAT.
- SHS hosted a Martin Luther King Junior assembly commemorating his visit to school 51 years ago.
- A new class was inducted into the National Honor Society.
- SHS students took a trip to meet Michelle Obama.
- A bomb threat caused us to evacuate the entire school, and students completed it flawlessly.
- Valentine was officially uninstalled as principal.
- We welcomed Principal Manka and new Assistant Principal Mr. Laskowski to our administrative team and they did an awesome job.
- We held our first annual dodge ball tournament. The gym teachers (rightfully so) won.
- SHS students were trained in hands only CPR during Hands for Life.
- For the fist time this year, the new building was dedicated strictly to freshmen.
- We held our second annual lip dup featuring popular TV show theme songs.
- Gloria Siniguglia, an SHS music teacher, was named the “Teacher of the Year” by Stamford public schools.
- The band played the national anthem at a Mets game.
- The drama club put on excellent shows and won outstanding awards from the Connecticut Drama Association.
- The junior class held the first ever SHS haunted house, which was a spooky success.
As for athletics, the Black Knights have experienced a ton of excellence this past school year. Key highlights are as follows:
- We won three state championships this year: Boys Hockey, Girls Basketball and Girls Diving
- Both boys and girls lacrosse made the state tournament this year (this marked the first time in program history for the boys).
- The softball team turned around a tough beginning by making it to the FCIAC championship game for the second year in a row.
- The boy’s baseball team won the city title and made the state tournament.
- Gilmar Barrios had a great year all around for cross country and track.
- The boys’ basketball team had an unexpectedly great season, finishing third in the FCIAC and winning the city championship.
Congrats on a spectacular year, BKN! Full of changes, victories, and positivity, this has surely been a year to remember.
