Chance the Rapper Drops Surprise Christmas Mixtape

Chance the Rapper and Jeremih just released their Christmas mixtape, “Merry Christmas Lil Mama,” on Soundcloud for all to stream. Everyone woke up to the surprise Thursday morning and it was a real holiday treat after being released at 3 a.m. EST.

According to Billboard, Chance and Jeremih dedicated the album to Windy City, Chicago, which explains the description of the album that reads, “For Chicago.”

Chance solely profits off of merch and is not signed to a label, so it is not out of the ordinary for the rapper to release a mixtape on a free streaming site. Though, it was surprising that there were no previous rumors of the release.

With nine tracks and 32 minutes of classic Christmas remixes and new freestyles, it is evident that they did not want to make a typical Christmas album. Chance does the majority of the rapping, despite Jeremih being known to rap on his albums, including his most recent album, “Late Nights: Europe.”

On their track, “Stranger At The Table,” Jeremih hooks with “oh baby give me one more chance,” paying a real tribute to Jackson. The mixtape also features comedian Hannibal Buress (“All the Way”), Noname (“The Tragedy”) and Lud Foe (“I Shoulda Left You”).

The most memorable part of the album is the line, “Google Chicago Bettie Jones them kids buried their mom.” The Chicago Tribune wrote a story titled, “Friends, family say goodbye to Bettie Jones,” a woman accidentally killed by Chicago police and very well could be the meaning behind the name of the mixtape.

Jones’ daughter was quoted in The Tribune saying, “My mama didn’t deserve this…the day after Christmas, the police took my mama from us for no reason. All she tried to do was help them and this is how she gets repaid? We’re hurting right now, we’re crying because of these police.”

Even though there is no reference to Jones and her family in the last track, “Merry Christmas Lil Mama,” Chance says “R.I.P. Rashad,” a local DJ in the West Side of Chicago, showing his love for those he has lost.
