Spooky Movies to Watch This Halloween Season

Jenny Collantes, Staff Writer

Instead of egging houses or trick-or-treating, the best thing to do on Halloween is to watch movies! These are some of the best Halloween movies (in no specific order). So grab some candy and get ready to laugh your brains out or scare your pants off.

1) Ghostbusters (1984)

After being kicked out of their position at a university in NYC, three scientists, (Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray) decide to start a business for trapping ghosts.  They come across a portal to another dimension that is capable of releasing all evil beings into the city and they are the only ones that can save the day.  If you want a laugh, you know who you are going to call…

2) Carrie (1976)

High school can be a tough time for teenagers, especially for Carrie White (Sissy Spacek).  Carrie is a timid girl who tries to deal with her mean classmates. She is an outcast and constantly under ridicule from her peers.  What they do not know is that they should not be messing with Carrie, because she has supernatural powers that she must use when things go awry. If you are in for a thrilling night, this is the movie for you.

3) Hocus Pocus (1993)

If you love witches, then you’ll love this movie! While exploring an abandoned
house, three kids accidentally release three evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) from the past who have been waiting for their chance to wreak havoc on the town once again. It is now up to the kids, (Omri Katz,Vinessa Shaw and Thora Birch) to save the town with the help of a magical cat.

4) Scream (1996)

A year after her mother’s death, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends receive strange phone calls.  They soon find out that the calls are from a ghostface killer. Now, they must find out who is the murderer behind the mask. This is the best movie for a scream.

5) Halloween (1978)

After being institutionalized for murdering his sister, masked murderer Michael
Myers escapes in a stolen car from Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois to stalk his next victims. Loomis must stop him before it is too late.

6) The Shining (1980)

A family becomes the caretakers of an isolated hotel in Colorado. Their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) starts receiving disturbing visions of the hotel’s past, powered by a force called “The Shining.” The visions grow worse and Danny turns into a murderous maniac set on terrorizing his family.  It is up to his father (Jack Nicholson) to bring him back from “The Shining.” This movie is known for its long-lasting scare effect, so beware.

7) Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her friends have been experiencing the same nightmares featuring the serial killer, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Krueger shows children their demons in their dreams which kills them in real life.  Nancy grows suspicious and uncovers a dark family secret, which is the key to stop Krueger.  She must work with her boyfriend (Johnny Depp) to solve the mystery and stop Krueger before it is too late.

The only thing better than the candy is the movie selection.  If you are stuck at home this Halloween, treat yourself to a quality scare or laugh, there is no trick! Happy Halloween!
