Why I Can't Put Down November 9 by Colleen Hoover

Jana Hulaj, Staff Writer

November 9 by Colleen Hoover takes the girl meets boy love story to the next level. The story follows writers Ben and Fallon. They meet on November 9, the day before Fallon’s meant to fly to New York from Los Angeles.  They end up spending the day together and make a pact each to see each other every November 9.  The catch is that they can have no communication during the rest of the year.  Their relationship goes through ups and downs over time and takes some unexpected twists.

This is an ideal book for a reading fanatic. Not only is the writing captivating, but Hoover also included funny and quirky book references that any book nerd would understand. If you are not a book nerd its no problem because this book has a story line that could be enjoyed by anyone. Also, don’t let the premise of a love story fool you. Self-confidence and understanding are themes that are also very prominent in the book. Hoover integrates many adult topics such as grief and depression into the plot that helps the reader really understand why the character are the way they are.

Hoover’s characters are very easy to get attached to, which makes the story so much more real and emotional.  Ben has a very comedic personality that makes him seem very easy going and easy to love. Fallon has many personal issues with her appearance that take a toll on her confidence, but she never has the personality of a shy girl. Over time the reader gets to see how Fallon learns to accept herself, making her confidence grow.

The main plot in the story is the connection between Ben and Fallon.  They have many funny, lighthearted moments, and they bring out the best in each other. However, they also experience some dramatic moments together that help them understand each other better. It’s a relationship you’ll be rooting for.

I give this book a five out of five. Hoover has a very distinctive writing style that I enjoyed. I could relate with many of her characters, which is what made the book so distinctive and memorable in my mind.  Personally, this is one of my favorite books that she has written and I didn’t want to put it down.  Its story line was something I had never read about and it blew me away. I really related to Fallon and watching her grow throughout the story was very exciting and moving.
