Fans Mourn Death of Lemmy, Rock Legend
Born to Lose, Lived to Win
January 7, 2016
Known more for his nickname Lemmy than his actual name, Ian Fraser Kilmister was an icon, almost a deity, in the world of hard rock and heavy metal. He is best remembered for being the founder, frontman and bassist for the legendary band Motörhead. Lemmy was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England and grew up in North Wales. He started his musical career playing guitar for local bands while working various common jobs. At one point in his life he was a roadie to the great Jimi Hendrix. He first reached musical success in 1971 with the band Hawkwind. Before Hawkwind, Lemmy had no experience as a bassist – his main instrument was the guitar. He played bass for the first time when the band’s bassist didn’t show up for a gig but left his gear in the band’s van. Lemmy took up the bass and nailed it, finding his preferred instrument from that moment onward. Four years later he founded the band Motörhead, with which he would reach worldwide fame. Up until his death, Lemmy was the only member of Motörhead to remain in the band’s lineup for its entirety. On December 26, 2015, Lemmy was taken to the hospital after he wasn’t feeling well. Brain scans found an extremely aggressive cancer in his brain and neck. Two days later, Lemmy died in his sleep. With his death came the end of Motörhead, with his bandmates saying that “Motörhead is no longer.” Lemmy will live on in the hearts of all his fans, friends and family, and of course in rock & roll history.
