Mockingjay, Part 2 Does Not Disappoint

The third installment of the popular series The Hunger Games came out on Friday, November 20, 2015. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 was highly anticipated by those who have read the book, written by Suzanne Collins. Many were predicting how the directors would get this installment all wrong by interfering with minor details and important parts of the book. In 2008, many people were not expecting The Hunger Games to come out as good as it did, and the Hollywood directors and actors have not let us down since. Many people asked, is actor Jennifer Lawrence too old to play such a young character as Katniss Everdeen? How would the film portray her character, personality and struggles?  Would the film show important parts that fans of the book thought were key points? Director Francis Lawrence seems to get just about everything right in Mockingjay, Part 2.

The Mockingjay, otherwise known as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), has pulled through in all of the movie installments. Showing her courageous attitude toward everything that happens, and the emotion and overwhelmedness that comes with being the Mockingjay, this “rebel” is supposed to be the face of a revolution. You can feel the emotion behind playing this big role. Not only that, but the love triangle continues between Katniss, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). Peeta, still partially brainwashed by the Capitol, is unsure of what’s real and what’s false; the Capitol has trained him to believe that the Mockingjay is the bad guy. Gale is the guy that has always been there all along. Will Katniss pick the right one?

Having a great score and cinematography are key to a movie filled with so much action and suspense. Francis Lawrence made great cinematographic choices, from the angles from which Katniss shot her arrows to the many hectic scenes in the movie, and even to the parts where action wasn’t even taking place. The score is what lets the viewer feel what is coming up next, and in this movie the score is so spot on, including some music that will be familiar if you saw the previous films. Pay attention when President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is about to make an announcement to the people; before he even makes an appearance, the music lets you know what is about to happen.

I really enjoyed the film. This last sequel did not let me down, and I didn’t expect it to since the first two were so good. I had high hopes for this one. If you enjoy adventure fiction, drama, action and science fiction, this movie is the right fit. Even those who have never read the books have fallen in love with the movies. Just realize that some parts from the novel are left out in the movies, so if you’re a person that wants every detail from the book in the movie, you might feel some slight disappointment.
