Film Review: The Longest Ride

Alexa Baer, Staff Writer

George Tillman Jr.’s movie The Longest Ride is a book-to-movie adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’s book of the same name. The movie follows the love story of couple Sophia (Britt Robinson) and Luke (Scott Eastwood) whose lives are intertwined with an old man, Ira (Alan Alda) when they save him after a car crash. Sophia saves a box of letters from the burning car, and once the old man wakes up she offers to read them to him. The letters are the love letters he wrote to his late wife Ruth. Conflicts in Luke and Sophia’s relationship are paralleled with conflicts in the relationship of Ruth and Ira.

As someone who read the book, the characters were exactly like I imagined; Sophia as a strong northerner, Luke as a hot cowboy, and Ira as a lovable grandfather figure. Robinson did a great job portraying her character Sophia. Eastwood had the part of the southern gentleman down pat. The chemistry between the two actors was so palpable it made me want a cowboy of my own!

For me, the soundtrack of this movie was a true highlight. The soundtrack fit the North Carolina setting perfectly. It was mainly country music, which added to southern vibe of the movie.

I loved this movie, and I would definitely see it again and again. The story is an emotional roller coaster, so make sure you bring a few tissues; but don’t worry, because you’ll still be in love with the cowboy.

I’m giving this movie a solid A.
