Fresh Off the Boat: A step toward the future for Asian-Americans?
April 6, 2015
With the emergence of shows such as Modern Family and Black-ish it was about time for a show about the underrepresented Asian-American family. This is exactly what ABC’s new popular show Fresh Off the Boat is all about. The show is based off of creator and food personality Freddie Huang’s autobiography of his experience with growing up in the United States being Asian. The show has been receiving good reception since its premiere but could also be a step toward the future for Asians-Americans in the entertainment business.
It has been 20 years since we have had a television show about an Asian-American family. This is 20 years where Asian-Americans were either underrepresented in media, stereotyped in media, or type casted in media. Although this may be the case, we have to remember that this is in the past and with the creation of a well received show including Asian-Americans could be just what is needed for Asian-Americans to be cast in more roles. This could also be paving the way for many new Asian-Americans that want to work in the entertainment business. All it takes is someone to make the first step for change to occur.
It may also be silly though to put all of our hopes and dreams into one television show. The show may not bring this big change that some of us are wishing for but the show itself is doing a good job of being entertaining to everyone and debunking the stereotypical idea people have involving all Asian people. If the show doesn’t provide this change at least we can enjoy the show, and wait for another chance for change in another 20 years or so.
You can catch Fresh Off the Boat on ABC on Tuesdays at 8 p.m.
