Sunday marked the most anticipated award show for actors and fans all over. The Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars, hosted its 86th annual award show to celebrate the success of American and international films at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres was the host of this prestigous event and opened up the show with a hilarious monologue that had the guests and viewers in utter laughter. Apart from Ellen DeGeneres, many household names presented awards that night for categories like Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and 22 others. It is fair to say that the motion picture, Gravity, took home most of the gold. Director Alfonso Cuarón and his team of actors won a total of 7 awards that night, including Best Cinematography and Best Visual effects. Although Gravity was an extraordinary film, the biggest winner of the night was 12 Years a Slave taking home the award for Best Picture. The films very own cast member Lupita Nyong’o won her first Oscar nomination in the category of Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as Patsey. During her sentimental speech, you could see actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Cumberbatch shed a few tears for this well deserving actress.
The show was filled with many tears between winning speeches and a tribute to fallen actors, but the night was also filled with many smiles and laughs. Hostess Ellen DeGeneres made sure to comply with the guests hunger and ordered 3 boxes of pizza from a local pizzeria. The comedian and fellow friend Brad Pitt were distributing paper plates and plain, vegetable, or peperoni pizza. Actors like Jared Leto, Jonah Hill, Julia Robert, and Jennifer Lawrence made sure to get a bite of this unexpected snack. Along with all the pizza and jokes, Ellen also managed to take the most retweeted selfie in the history of Twitter. Now with over 2 million RT’s, starlets Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, and Kevin Spacey were apart of this new world record. The 2014 Academy Awards was definitely a huge hit.
