In the recent blockbuster American Hustle, 1970’s con man Irving Resenfeld (Christian Bale) and his seductive “British” assistant Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) are forced to work for a slightly insane FBI agent, Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). After DiMaso busts the pair for their own con work, he tells them that he will let them off the hook if they help him find other criminals within the world of New Jersey powerbrokers and the mafia.
Resenfeld is played by Christian Bale, who is almost unrecognizable due to his intricate comb over and excessive weight gain. His partner Sydney ( Amy Adams) dons a fake British accent in order to disguise her true identity. DiMaso’s role was given to Bradley Cooper, who manages to convince the audience that he is completely insane. His slight charm makes the role a fun one to watch.
Resenfeld befriends the mayor, Carmine Polito, (played by Jeremy Renner) even though he knows that this is only going to cause trouble considering that Polito is the guy the FBI is after. Jennifer Lawrence plays Rosalyn Rosenfeld (Irving’s wife), and though it is a supporting role, she stands out from the rest due to her astounding beauty and hilarious personality.
This movie was constantly entertaining. I especially enjoyed the ‘70s style that is evident throughout the film. From the outfits to going to discos to everyone smoking cigarettes, it was very convincing. My favorite actor was definitely Jennifer Lawrence. Everything she said was ditzy and hilarious, and she truly added a lot of drama to the plot. The only critique I have is that Amy Adams’ fake British accent sounded, well… fake. I don’t know if the director purposely wanted it to be obvious that she is not who she says she is, or if that truly was the best accent she could muster. Regardless, it was not very substantial.
This movie is truly filled with one great star after another, and this is apparent in the quality of the film. There are so many twists and unexpected happenings in it that it’s hard to identify what is true from what is fake. There is an astounding plot twist at the end of the movie that will leave even the most observant of people puzzled. It is a definite must-see, and is yet another great film from the director that brought us Silver Linings Playbook, David O. Russel.
