On the night of Friday, December 13th, pop singer Beyoncé dropped an unexpected album through iTunes causing a spark and chaos in the social media world.
The album named Beyoncé was released at midnight shortly following an Instragram picture in which the singer posted herself saying “Surprise!” The new album is a mixture of songs and videos, containing 14 tracks and 17 music videos, one including her daughter Blue Ivy. Beyoncé’s reasoning for dropping the album so shockingly was, “Honestly I was at a point where I felt like, you know, everything feels the same. That’s how I felt and if I could not challenge that, then maybe it’s time for me to do something else or develop more artists, which is something I want to do.”
In the short 12 hours of the album’s release, it generated 1.2 million tweets and in the first 24 hours it sold nearly half a million copies. Billboard.com states that the success of the unanticipated album may sell Beyoncé over 600,000 copies in its first seven days of release, placing the singer in the Billboard charts #1 spot.
Stamford High School senior Spencer Stovell bought the album on the day of its release and states, “It’s the most phenomenal thing that has ever happened in music history.” Considering Beyoncé’s past success and Grammy winning career, it is no surprise that she managed to top the chart again.
