Starting off as opening acts for artists like Marina and The Diamonds, and playing small festivals in their native Sweden, Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, also known as Icona Pop, kicked off summer of 2013 with a much anticipated North American headlining tour for their new album This Is… Icona Pop and previous EP Iconic.
Known for their #1 hit single “I Love It,” Hjelt and Jawo hit the stage at Webster Hall in NYC last Friday for a sold out show to over 2,500 fans. Up and rising opening acts Sirah and K.Flay pumped up the crowd with their pop, rock, and EDM inspired mix tapes. During her song “Inhale,” opening act Sirah made sure the crowd remembered her name and threw herself into a pit of 2,500 people and crowd surfed her way around the floor of the venue.
Shortly after the hour and 45-minute set of the opening acts, the hit song “We Got The World” started to play in the background and pop duo Icona Pop made their appearance. With bright red club lights, strong bass, and avant-garde future-esque attire, Hjelt and Jawo’s stage presence made their screaming fans feel as if they had entered another dimension and made the floor shake from the uplifting rave like features. Performing songs like “Manners,” “Ready For The Weekend” and “All Night,” Icona Pop brought the house down with their energetic dancing and upbeat electro-pop tracks.
It is fair to say the show was a huge success. Celebrity attendees like Perez Hilton and Z100 radio host Trey could be seen from the VIP balcony singing along and head bopping to the Swedish duo, who later were presented with a platinum record for their song “I Love It.” The show was full of great energy, song-to-song sing along, and floor shaking dancing. The Fans have not had enough of Icona Pop, and they are scheduled for another NYC sold out show in Brooklyn Wednesday night and TV performances on “The Today Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.” These girls are surely on a path of music world domination.
