Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, Avengers) did not disappoint with his new television show “The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” a spin-off show about the inner workings of the secret government agency that runs everything in the Marvel cinematic and comic universe.
It wasn’t surprising to see that Whedon kept with the trend of using actors from his former projects. Within the first ten minutes of the episode, we see J. August Richards playing a man with a tough life who happens to have some super powers. Richards was also on “Angel: The Series” another show created by Joss Whedon. We also see Ron Glass playing a doctor who works for S.H.I.E.L.D. who appeared on “Firefly,” another show created by Whedon. However, we cannot ignore Clark Gregg in his role as Agent Phil Coulson, a character that many thought was dead after watching the Avengers. Gregg creates a persona for Phil Coulson that is all his own. Cobie Smulders reprises her role as Agent Maria Hill, and although her screen time was short, she had some hysterical lines. I think it may be safe to say that Agent Hill won’t be much of a prominent character this season while Smulders is shooting her last season of “How I Met Your Mother,” but together the two create an effective “team.”
Although most of the pilot episode was aesthetically pleasing to the audience, we are still slightly unsure of what this team of merry men is trying to accomplish in the series. The whole plot seems to be slightly shrouded in mystery at the moment, but I can’t deny that there were little bits of dialogue that will be important in future episodes. There were times where it felt like the show was trying to shove it down your throat that this is a spin-off of The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, with constant references to the other heroes and even Iron Man 3’s villain’s weapon – Extremis.
The show was definitely pleasing and fun for any fans who decided to watch. There will be background on the amazing characters that we all know and love as well as some new characters that we will most likely grow to love. Hopefully we won’t cry too much when Joss inevitably does what he does best and kills someone off. I’d say that this was a great pilot, and people should definitely start watching and keep watching. If you weren’t into the Avengers universe before, you will be now.
So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that ABC doesn’t cancel this show after a season or two, thus turning it into the next “Firefly” or “Dollhouse.”
