This past Sunday, the 65th Annual Emmy Awards were aired. The show had many highlights and many downfalls, and Neil Patrick Harris once again put on his “A” game by starting with a monologue that enthused and entertained most watching.
I must touch upon the outstanding performance given by those nominated for Best Choreography for creating an amazing number that represented most series that were nominated that night. Each show was reenacted authentically with beautiful choreography and the dancer’s amazing movements.
The Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress in a Comedy/Drama awards were memorable. Tony Walsh claimed his award for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in “Veep” as Gary Walsh. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Merritt Wever for her part as Zoey Barkow in “Nurse Jackie.” And who could forget her acceptance speech either, “Thanks so much. Thank you so much. I gotta go. Bye.” Apparently she was in as much of a shock as the audience when she won the award. There was Bobby Cannavale who won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his part in “Boardwalk Empire” as Gyp Rosetti. Anna Gunn won the award for her performance as Skyler White in “Breaking Bad.”
Jim Parsons, for his role Sheldon Copper in “The Big Bang Theory,” led the way with his award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. It was a shock for Parsons as he was up against acclaimed comedians like Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K., Don Cheadle, Jason Bateman, and Matt LeBlanc. Leading Actress in a Comedy Series went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her role as Selina Meyer in “Veep.” Jeff Daniels also shocked many when he claimed his award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama series for his role as Will McAvoy in “The Newsroom.” “Homeland” won Outstanding Actress with Claire Danes playing Carrie Mathison.
Of course it wasn’t really a surprise when the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy series was awarded to “Modern Family,” because the show has won this award since its conception. It also wasn’t that shocking when Outstanding Drama Series went to “Breaking Bad,” the show about a meth cooker trying to make enough money to support his son and his own chemo treatments.
The Emmys were definitely an entertaining show, and we saw many shocking turns throughout the night, but I’d have to say that “Breaking Bad” must be a pretty amazing series because they were kicking butt and taking names this Sunday.
