Kayne West’s newest album Yeezus is not what I expected at all. Kanye’s first few albums were so good and so dynamic in what he rapped about. His songs had a deeper meaning to them. Like the song “Jesus Walks” on The College Dropout –it is so powerful and honest it’s amazing. The song “Everything I Am” on Graduation was very true to himself; it was also very refreshing at the time. However, I don’t think that Yeezus was very focused on lyrics at all. I think Kanye wanted to get his rhythms and beats out. To do so he needed to add in simple and shallow lyrics to call it an album. Almost every song in the album is egotistical and narcissistic. The whole album is lyrically shallow. The lyrics were very simple and easy, there was no depth to what he was saying.
I have to admit that the beats were very original and fresh. I haven’t heard anything like it, which I like. The songs’ beats and rhythms were hit and miss, but overall it was very different. I didn’t like “On Sight” and “I’m A God” too much, I thought they were more annoying than anything else. I did like “Bound 2” and “Guilt Trip,” not just because I like the beat but because the lyrics were actually decent.
Kanye West went in a totally different direction for this album. I can see why he decided to do this. Every artist needs to change things up to stay relevant. I believe this album could potentially be a game changer for hip hop. Kanye West has already changed the game when he released My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, because he introduced more musicality to it. This caused many artists to follow in his footsteps in making their music more musical. It is still too soon to tell, though, if this album is a positive or negative change.
My final thoughts on Yeezus are: if you are looking for a fun and simple album to pump you up before a game, this album is for you. If you are looking for a deep and lyrical album I suggest you listen to his early work.
