Sal’s Pizzeria Review

Jeremy Young , Correspondent

This is my first pizza review. I’ll be reviewing pizza near us to give everyone the best places to go. I’ll be giving every slice that I try at a place a score out of 10. For reference, here is how I like to score pizzas:

0-3- bad pizza

4-5- mediocre pizza

6- average pizza

7- good pizza (most slices won’t score above a 7.5)

8- great pizza (worth traveling for)

9-10 fantastic pizza (you MUST try it)

Recently, I reviewed Sal’s Pizzeria in Mamaroneck, NY. Sal’s is about a 30 minute drive from Stamford High.

Sal’s Pizza in Mamaroneck (Jeremy Young)

Sal’s Pizzeria was founded in 1964. From the outside, it looks like a classic Italian pizza shop with a great atmosphere that surrounds it. Once walking into Sal’s, you get an authentic feeling of a great pizza place, with the complimentary smells of fresh pizza and body odor. It has a very classic look to it, and the people working there clearly knew what they were doing. This place only takes cash for their orders: from my experience, I have found that some of the best pizza I have had only accepts cash. I ordered 1 cheese slice, 1 salad slice, and 1 sicilian pie (these seemed to be their most popular slices). The sicilian pie took about 20 minutes to make, but the two individual slices took less than 2 minutes.

I think that a pizza place can often be defined by their plain cheese slice of pizza. This one was great. The crust was flavorful and crispy. Their cheese was slightly greasy, but still great. Their sauce, however, was quite average. I would have appreciated more tang and flavor to this sauce. I could imagine that adding some more salt could have elevated the sauce.

I was shocked to hear that this place was popular for their salad pizza, but it did not disappoint. The crust on this slice was still crispy and flavorful. The salad here brought a lot more flavor. The dressing was very acidic and tangy, but this complemented their sauce perfectly. The pizza worked very well together, and it might be one of the best salad slices of pizza that I’ve ever had.

The sicilian pie is another famous one at Sal’s. This was a great sicilian slice. However, I was a bit frustrated with the excess amount of cheese on it. Despite there being too much cheese, the pizza tasted amazing. The crust was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. It was a bit doughy, which is very good when it’s done right. It was quite heavy, but that’s often expected from some great sicilian pizza.

Overall, the scores for each pizza are below. This was a great place with great pizza, but the crust carried it. I would like to see some more flavor in their sauce, and a bit less grease. With a better sauce, I could see all three of these slices scoring in the 9’s. Sal’s is still definitely worth traveling to, and I look forward to visiting there again.

Plain Slice- 8.3/10

Salad Slice- 8.9/10

Sicilian Slice- 8.8/10
