SHS Students Lament Fireworks Cancellation

Many students remember going to Cummings or West beach to watch the fireworks put on by the City.  Unfortunately, many will not be able to experience this event this year.  With summer coming closer and the school year coming to an end many students and Stamford residents look forward to the annual firework display.  However, this year the city of Stamford has decided to end this holiday tradition.

Due to more than a $400,000 reduction in the budget across many departments, there have been several cuts, including the Fourth of July firework display.  Several Stamford High Students have mixed opinions about the recent cut.

Some SHS students believe their summer will be very different than in years past and are extremely disappointed.  Junior Lauren Ferrajina said “the fireworks have been a tradition for years, so seeing it be canceled because of budget cuts broke my heart. The children in Stamford won’t be able to enjoy the 4th of July this year like they should be.”

America’s Independence is a holiday that should be celebrated and many students look forward to the fireworks.  The City of Stamford should not be able to just “cancel” a holiday.  Many people look forward to this event as soon as the night is over and this is a real disappointment.  Junior Nick Otis said “the Stamford fireworks are something that all of us look forward to all year.  Seeing them canceled is really sad for me because summer 2018 is not going to be the same without them.”

The summer will not be the same without the annual firework display.
