Remember the App for That?

Abby Bushell, Editor-in-Chief

When was the last time you sat down with a bowl of popcorn on a Saturday night to watch a new episode of your favorite Disney Channel show? Does the word “Mancala” spark flashbacks of intense indoor-recess tournaments with your elementary school squad? In this graveyard of forgotten childhood memories also lay the apps we rushed home to play on our iTouches after school. At one point, getting that high score or unlocking that new character seemed like something that would define us for the rest of our lives. But like any fad, the popularity of any given app rises and declines so quickly that before even realizing it, our ever-so-temporary favorites are deleted, forgotten and replaced.

Let us reminisce over a few apps that we swore would never go out of style:

1) Tap Tap Revenge

Personally, I cringe picturing 12-year-old me standing on the living room couch throwing my hair back and forth (attempting to “rock out,” but more often than not just giving myself whiplash) while viciously tapping the screen of my “guitar.” Today, when I hear the less than quality tunes offered by my free version of the app in public, I look down and see my fingers rhythmically prancing around thanks to muscle-memory.

2) Scoops

Scoops: the game that encourages what every parent tries so hard to discourage—a lust for ice cream and disdain toward vegetables. This application requires the player to maneuver a virtual ice cream cone across the screen in an effort to catch falling scoops of creamy goodness and dodge veggies. I recollect telling my mother how one time my ice cream was piled so high above the ground that I was able to see Mars. I guess I left out the part that it was virtual Mars. She looked at me like I had five heads.

3) Flappy Bird

Why this ever-so-simple app went completely viral is still a mystery. Its plain design and straightforward goal, to fly your small yellow bird through a sea of green pipes without hitting them, captivated the world for a solid few months during 2014. The app was so addictive that its developer, Dong Nguyen, had it removed from the App Store in February of 2014. However, its removal couldn’t stop those who had already secured the application from worsening their addiction.

4) Temple Run

Who would have thought running away from demonic monkeys in a forest-encompassed temple could be so dang entertaining? If I had to guess, over its tenure on my iTouch, I collectively spent days playing Temple Run. The game’s popularity probably stems from its ideal combination of speed, unlockables and high scoring. Once it completed its “run” at the top of the App Store’s charts, a few spin off games were created, all of which saw little success in comparison to the original.

5) 2048

2048 hit the app store in 2014, instantly acquiring millions of downloads. Fun fact: This. Game. Took. Over. My. Life. Why I spent hours upon hours swiping right, left, up and down to add my blocks up to 2048 is honestly beyond me. All I know is that the closer I got, the more I ached to play again and beat the game (yes, I realize this is practically a textbook case of addition). Anyway, today, many games cannot be, persay, “beaten;” instead, the object is to merely beat your previous high score. 2048 likely garnered such immense appeal because there was actually a way to win.

As fun as it is to stroll, or better yet scroll, down memory lane, it’s equally as weird to think about how much technology we have already cycled through over our lives. Who knows, maybe in a few years, we will be evicting apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter from our home screens—for all we know, we might not even be using iPhones or iTouches in the near future!
