WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T READ THIS ARTICLE ABOUT BREAKING RULES

A look at 14 “rules” that are more like suggestions.

Carina Dempsey, Staff Writer

“Rules are rules.” From a young age, adults demand that we listen to instructions and do what we are told. However, as we grow older, we sometimes stop fighting the urge to ignore the rules, and start bending them instead. This does not make us awful people, it simply makes us human. Besides, everyone knows that rules are meant to be broken. Here are 14 rules that people can break and still sleep soundly:

1. Eating raw cookie dough
• Even if the package clearly states not to eat it, most people look forward to the taste of the raw dough more than the actual cookies.

2. Feeding the Animals
• Zoos, farms, playgrounds, and amusement parks are filled with people who just can’t resist that cute face. We all know the ducks will be eternally grateful for those french fries.

3. Not reading the Terms and Conditions, but checking off the box anyways
• Does anybody ever read this? Eh, whatever, it probably doesn’t matter anyways.

4. Throwing that plastic bottle into the garbage can
• We’ve all been there: desperate to get rid of an empty water bottle, with no recycle bin in sight, and finally you stumble upon a garbage can. Hopefully nobody sees…

5. Running at the swimming pool
• If there’s no lifeguard on duty chances are you’re going to run right up to the edge of the pool and cannonball in. Potentially dangerous, yet exhilarating!

6. Downloading music and movies for free online
• “Pirating” is a strong word.

7. Staying in 10 minute parking spots for longer than 10 minutes
• When driving an extra couple minutes to find a normal parking spot is just too hard, you have to settle for one of these. Maybe soccer practice will only last 10 minutes?

8. Bringing your own food to the movie theater
• With movie theater food prices at an all-time high, it seems to make more sense to sneak in some peanut M&Ms than to pay $5.00 for one package.

9. Staying at the beach after sunset
• Why spend days at the beach and enjoy the view when you can go at night and not see anything at all?

10. Leaving shopping carts in the middle of the parking lot
• After spending all that time, energy, and money grocery shopping, rolling back the shopping cart may be too much to ask. Leaving carts scattered about in “parking lot limbo” makes life just a tad bit easier.

11. Taking more than one sample at Costco
• Instead of eating dinner at home, why not fill up on a couple rounds of fried chicken and rice at Costco? Delicious and free!

12. Not Flossing
• Whether people are forgetful, do not care about their oral hygiene, or are silently rebelling against the dental industry, it seems that flossing is just not a part of most daily routines.

13. Crossing the street on the red hand
• Don’t pedestrians always have the right away? Fear not: we all understand that you have to make that 6:30 p.m. dinner reservation.

14. Drawing outside the lines
• For all those hipsters (and five year olds) who just can’t stay in the lines: you are not alone.
